Serge Gnabry relaxed on Bayern future as he rediscovers attacking spark

Serge Gnabry has made a flying start to the 2025/26 campaign, delivering key performances for both Bayern Munich and Germany while questions remain over his long-term future.

The winger has already contributed four goals and three assists in his opening nine appearances across club and country. For Bayern, the only matches in which he has not had a direct hand in a goal were the 3-1 Champions League victory over Chelsea and the 3-2 DFB-Pokal first-round win at Wehen Wiesbaden.

Gnabry's form has revived memories of his impact in Bayern's sextuple-winning 2019/20 season, when he scored crucial goals in decisive stages across competitions. However, inconsistency has often been his biggest challenge. Whether he can sustain this level until May remains the key question.

Bayern face a decision, with Gnabry's contract set to expire on 30 June, 2026. Unless an extension is agreed soon, he would be free to sign a pre-contract with another club from January. That scenario would leave Bayern at risk of losing him on a free transfer.

The 29-year-old has downplayed talk about his future. Speaking to Sky Sport, he said: "I'm not thinking about that at all right now. I'm very relaxed. I'm just happy that things are going so well, that we're playing so well.

"We'll see about everything else when the time comes."

Gnabry has stepped up in Jamal Musiala's absence and is expected to play an even bigger role when Nicolas Jackson departs for the CAF Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal in January. His challenge will be to maintain his influence once both players are back in contention.

Bayern's board have previously been swayed by late-season contributions to keep him at the club, but whether they will take the same view this time is uncertain. For now, the responsibility lies with Gnabry to prove he deserves a new deal.
