Senegal book spot in AFCON quarterfinals after coming from behind to beat Sudan

Pape Gueye netted a brace as Senegal booked their spot in the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations after coming from behind to beat Sudan 3-1 in Tangier on Saturday.

Aamir Abdallah had given Sudan a shock lead as early as the sixth minute but Gueye's double in the first half ensured the Lions of Teranga progressed into the last eight of the continental tournament.

Senegal came into the contest as heavy favourites having finished at the top of Group D after two victories and a draw while Sudan only qualified as one of the best third-placed teams having only won once and suffering two defeats in Group E.

Knockout football is a different beat though and Sudan started the match well and took an early lead when Abdallah found space on the left and cut-in before unleashing a beautiful long-range effort that beat goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

Going behind seemed to lift the more star-studded Senegal outfit and they equalised just before the half hour mark when Gueye fired in a proper shot that edge of the box.

The Lions of Teranga were now sniffing blood and started to dominate proceedings, and Gueye found the back of the net for the second time in first half stoppage-time.

Senegal kept dominating the ball after the interval but spurned several good opportunities to extend the lead.

It took until the 77th minute for the Senegalese to seal the contest when teenage substitute Ibrahim Mbaye found his team's third goal.

Senegal will not meet Mali or Tunisia in the quarterfinals.
