The 31-year-old has been without a club since July last year, despite having spent more than a decade plying his trade at the highest level in Europe.
Phiri built an extensive career abroad, with spells in Denmark, France and Turkey, after leaving South Africa at a young age having come through the Bidvest Wits academy system.
Kaizer Chiefs were the first club to formally engage Phiri when he made it clear that he was keen to return home and test himself in the Premier Soccer League.
However, discussions with the Soweto giants failed to progress.
In an interview with Metro FM’s Sports Night Amplified with Andile Ncube late last year, Phiri suggested that financial expectations proved to be the major stumbling block in negotiations.
With both parties eventually moving on, the midfielder remained patient, waiting for an opportunity that would meet his terms and allow him to resume his career in the Betway Premiership. That opportunity has now arrived at Sekhukhune United, who have moved decisively to secure his signature.
Babina Noko were in the market for midfield reinforcements following the unexpected departure of Miguel Timm to Cape Town City, and Phiri quickly emerged as a prime target.
He was invited to train with the squad for assessment by head coach Eric Tinkler as the club ramps up preparations following the Africa Cup of Nations recess.
It is understood the technical team were sufficiently impressed to fast-track the process, instructing the player to undergo a medical while a contract – including options beyond June 2026 – is finalised.
The public broadcaster has been informed that an official announcement is expected in the coming days, confirming Phiri’s long-awaited return to competitive football.
Notably, Phiri will be among a rare group of players to feature in the PSL without previously making an appearance in the league, despite developing locally.
He has six international caps for Bafana Bafana.
