Sarr’s defining moment – as he fulfills his father’s dream

In the 23rd minute in the semifinal, Senegal defender Mamadou Sarr came from the bench to replace the injured captain Kalidou Koulibaly during their 1-0 win over Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semifinal in Tangier.

Approximately 24 years ago, Mamadou’s father Pape Sarr missed out on playing in the AFCON final for the Teranga Lions as he was suspended and they went on to lose 3-2 on penalties against Samuel Eto’o’s Cameroon.

But now his son, is about to rewrite the script and is hopeful for a better result against Morocco tonight...

"No, I do not believe there is pressure, but as I said, considering his entire professional history and the exceptional player he is, it is honestly a great honour to replace him."

When Senegal enters the field against Morocco at the Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium, they will be hoping that they don’t get booed after they had complained about treatment on a variety of issues, including security, in the past few days.

But Sarr, a Chelsea player on loan to French Ligue 1 club Strasbourg FC, says they are focused on the game.

One of the dominant issues in the past few days around the Teranga Lions was their concern about lack of security around the team, when they traveled from Tangier to Rabat, but Sarr says that chapter is behind them now...

"That's an off field issue, but we are focused on what will happen on the field, and everyone is calm and ready to play this final. We expect a Moroccan team that will press us from the start, but we will be ready for whatever they might bring."

Senegalese and Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara has been one of the prominent players in this tournament for the West African side and he also believes that even with limited support on the stands, they will emerge victorious tonight...
