Despite the federation yet to publicly confirm that Steenbok, who was in the third of his five-year contract, is leaving it’s understood that behind the scenes the motherbody is planning for life without him.
Ntseki previously coach Bafana Bafana when he stepped in to permanently take the reins from Stuart Baxter following the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, where he was assistant coach to the Englishman.
However, in failing to qualify the national team to the next edition of the continental tournament in 2021, the organisation then decided to sack Ntseki and recruit Hugo Broos, the incumbent Bafana mentor.
Ntseki subsequently spent three years at Kaizer Chiefs, first as the head of youth and scouting department before surprisingly being appointed as the first team coach in June 2023.
Amakhosi fired Ntseki a little over 100 days later, and recently the coach resurfaced as the technical advisor at Marumo Gallants for a brief period before his exit opened the door for a conversation with SAFA.
Ntseki was asked to coach the CHAN squad last month in the two legs against Egypt and is likely to still be in charge when they face Malawi in the play-offs to make it to the tournament proper.
As things stand, the technical committee want him to return to the federation as the technical director with Steenbok not willing to reverse his decision to quit over the alleged lack of support internally.
