Report: Bruno Guimaraes tells Newcastle he wants Arsenal move

Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes has informed the club of his desire to leave St James' Park, with Arsenal stepping up their interest in the Brazil international midfielder.

Sky Sports News has confirmed that Guimaraes has made his intentions known to Newcastle, although the club are currently refusing to comment on the situation. Arsenal have not yet made direct contact with Newcastle regarding a possible deal, but discussions over the potential financial terms of a transfer have taken place through intermediaries.

The 28-year-old has emerged as one of Arsenal's leading midfield targets as manager Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his squad ahead of the new season. The Gunners are believed to be seeking one high-profile central midfielder, with Guimaraes viewed as a player capable of partnering Declan Rice and adding further quality to their engine room.

Guimaraes joined Newcastle from Lyon for 35 million pounds in January 2022 and has since become a central figure in the club's revival under their Saudi-backed ownership. He captained the side to Carabao Cup success two seasons ago, ending Newcastle's 70-year wait for a domestic trophy, and remains a hugely popular figure among supporters.

Despite the player's desire for a new challenge, Newcastle are adamant that their captain is not for sale. The club's position throughout the off-season has been that they will reject approaches for Guimaraes, who still has two years remaining on his contract with an option to extend until 2029.

The Magpies are particularly determined to avoid another major departure after already losing key players this window. Sandro Tonali has joined Tottenham in a deal worth an initial 92.5 million pounds, while Anthony Gordon completed a 69.3 million pound move to Barcelona. Newcastle are also aware of the disruption caused by the prolonged Alexander Isak saga this time last year, which ended with the striker joining Liverpool for 130m pounds.

However, Arsenal's interest is intensifying, with the midfielder's representatives having explored the conditions of a potential move. A fee of around 60m pounds was reportedly discussed as an initial indication of what a deal could require, although Newcastle are expected to demand a significant package given Guimaraes' importance to the team.

The Brazilian's age is also likely to be a factor in Arsenal's calculations, with Guimaraes turning 29 in November. While the Gunners see him as an immediate upgrade and a proven Premier League performer, they are weighing up the long-term value of any potential investment.
