Rayners credits dressing room harmony for historic World Cup run

Bafana Bafana striker Iqraam Rayners says the absence of big egos in South Africa's dressing room has been key to their historic run to the FIFA World Cup round of 32.

The side led by coach Hugo Broos secured a memorable 1-0 victory over South Korea on Thursday to reach the knockout stage of the global showpiece for the first time. Speaking to SABC Sport, the Mamelodi Sundowns forward credited the team's unity and selfless mentality, insisting Broos has built a squad that works together and fights for one another in every game.

"Everyone is doing their part and we are all fighting together doesn't matter who plays. The most important thing for us is that we always approach a game with the right attitude and the right mentality because that's what brought us here."

On the game plan against South Korea, the forward highlighted the work behind the scenes after a lacklustre start against co-hosts Mexico in the opener.

Rayners also showed gratitude to South Africans who stayed up at 3am.

"Thank you for the love and all the support we really do appreciate it a lot, and now we are onto the next one on Sunday. We will fight against Canada."
