PSL charge Themba Zwane and Mamelodi Sundowns

The Premier Soccer League has charged midfielder Themba Zwane and his club Mamelodi Sundowns for delaying the start of their MTN8 quarterfinal fixture against Moroka Swallows last weekend.

SABC Sport can reveal league prosecutor Zola Majavu has summoned both player and team to a hearing in the coming days after throwing the rule book at the two parties following the incident at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

In what was a live televised broadcast, the Sundowns skipper held up kick-off by three minutes having moved out of the centre circle to perform a choreographed dance, which is a greeting to their fans.

Referee Cedric Muvhali had long instructed Zwane to get the fixture underway given the scheduled time and reacted by showing the player a yellow card.

The PSL, through Majavu, has followed up on the episode with the supporting report from match commissioner Patrick Marametsi.

Zwane and Sundowns will be given an opportunity to defend their actions via a written plea within the four days after the charge sheet is handed out, but it’s been made clear that the player’s actions brought “the game, sponsors, the clubs, the league, SAFA, CAF and FIFA” into disrepute.

Majavu has a reputation to deal swiftly with cases against member clubs to avoid a backlog and this should be no different.

Sundowns beat Swallows 1-0 with a goal from Zwane to send them to the semifinals of the MTN8, where they will now face Kaizer Chiefs over two legs.
