Pitso Mosimane's advice to Percy Tau on a possible return to Europe

Newly-appointed Al Wahda head coach Pitso Mosimane has reiterated that he stands by his decision to push for Percy Tau’s move to Egyptian giants Al Ahly and advised him again on possible future European moves.

Speaking to the media this past weekend on the sidelines of the official launch of the Pitso Mosimane Soccer Schools programme, Mosimane says if an overseas move was to come again for Tau, he must consider his playing options.

"Percy moved to Europe earlier, and it's not for me to say what happened – you know what happened, he did well in the Belgian [second] division, let's be honest, and that put him in the Belgian first division – he played for Anderlecht and all that," said Mosimane.

"Okay, and then it moved him to the English Premier League, which is the best league in the world [in] my opinion, and he struggled, he didn't get game time – we said maybe [it's] the coach, this, that, etc.

"By the way, Percy was not getting younger. And by the time he came to Al Ahly, he was 28, if I'm not mistaken, so would you want to stay for the logo of a team when you're not playing football?

"If you can be paid the same or better, and you have a chance to play in the [FIFA Club] World Cup, to win the [CAF] Champions League, playing for the best team on the continent, where would you like to be?

"Why has Gabriel Jesus moved from Manchester City [to Arsenal]? Why would [players] move from Manchester City. It's also game-time, but don't lose [grip of] your finances."

Al Ahly paid close to Two million pounds to Brighton and Hove Albion for Tau’s services and after struggling with injuries, especially during Mosimane’s reign at the African Club century, the Mamelodi Sundowns product has been a revelation under Swiss coach Marcel Koller.

"He has done exceptionally well, he was really stoked to show his talent [but] injuries – at the time I was with Percy at Al Ahly, he had a lot of injuries, even the national team coach [Hugo Broos] was complaining," he added.

"He got a break a little bit and injuries gave him space, and he's started to play well, gain confidence and, in fact, Percy is playing at the level that he is and I think he can do better.

"So, if there is an opportunity for him to get [back] to Europe, why not? But don't go to Europe and not play, because you are now 29 and you need to play."
