Phil Foden eager for 'fresh start' under new Man City boss Enzo Maresca

Phil Foden believes he has a chance to rediscover his best form under new Manchester City boss Enzo Maresca after committing his long-term future to the Premier League champions.

The 26-year-old midfielder recently signed a four-year contract extension that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2030, despite enduring a difficult spell in front of goal.

Foden managed 10 goals last season but has now gone 31 appearances for club and country without finding the net. Nevertheless, City demonstrated their confidence in the England international by offering him fresh terms.

Foden said he is determined to "repay" the trust the club has placed in him and described the arrival of Maresca as an opportunity for a "fresh start".

"It has made me feel relaxed and I can just concentrate on being the best version of me and give back to the football club for them trusting in me," Foden said.

"It is nice to see the support from the club and obviously it means a lot.

"It's about time I try and repay them and give back to the club."

Asked about his general mood ahead of the new campaign, he added: "Very good - a fresh start, a new manager and up to now, really enjoying it.

"It is very strange but I know Enzo from before, so that also helps. I know him quite well and what [he] is about.

"That has definitely helped, to have that relationship with him."

The Italian took charge following Pep Guardiola's departure at the end of last season, having previously worked in City's academy and later as the club's first-team assistant coach.

The attacking midfielder enjoyed a remarkable 2023-24 campaign, scoring 19 goals as City secured the Premier League title. His performances earned him both the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year award and the Premier League Player of the Season honour.

Handed his senior debut by Guardiola at just 17, Foden has since amassed 369 appearances for City. During that time, he has collected six Premier League crowns, one UEFA Champions League trophy and two FA Cups, and is now hoping to add further success under Maresca's leadership.
