The public broadcaster first reported on 22 September that Pirates had made a late approach to land the New Zealand international before the deadline.
Stellenbosch were understood to be open to negotiating the sale, but with limited time to secure a suitable replacement, the deal ultimately fell through.
As a result, De Jong remained in the Western Cape for the first half of the campaign, however with the mid-season window set to open on New Year’s Day, the Buccaneers are reassessing their options up front.
The club wants to add more depth and competition for Evidence Makgopa and Tshegofatso Mabasa, and De Jong has resurfaced as a strong candidate to bring additional quality to their frontline.¨
Talks between the two clubs are expected to resume in the coming weeks and given that discussions were already at an advanced stage in September, insiders believe there should be fewer hurdles this time around.
However, Stellenbosch may once again hesitate if they are unable to identify and secure a replacement quickly – a factor that could delay or even derail the transfer.
De Jong, who recently earned call-ups to the New Zealand national team for friendlies against Poland, Norway and Colombia, is eager to maintain his momentum.
With the Kiwis having already qualified for next year’s FIFA World Cup, the forward is pushing to cement his place in the final squad and a move to Pirates could provide the platform he needs to further elevate his career.
