Orlando Pirates leave it late before beating Siwelele FC

Orlando Pirates notched up their fourth win in six Betway Premiership matches this season after a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Siwelele FC at the Free State Stadium on Tuesday.

Oswin Appollis came off the bench to net the winner with 10 minutes remaining as the Buccaneers moved up to fourth in the league standings, one point behind third-placed Kaizer Chiefs.

It was the home side that had the first effort on goal when Gape Moralo tested Sipho Chaine with a long-range free kick as early as the fifth minute.

The Soweto giants should have taken the lead in the seventh minute but Relebohile Mofokeng miscued a volley from close-range after being picked out by Deon Hotto.

Siwelele had an opportunity just before the halftime beak but former Pirates player Vincent Pule shot a rather tame effort that Chaine denied.

With the game remaining goalless well into the second stanza, Buccaneers head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou turned to his bench to find the breakthrough and it a came from Bafana winger Appollis.

The former Polokwane City attacker showed good composure to control on the edge of the box before rifling a powerful low shot that beat home goalkeeper Ricardo Goss.

The hosts had good chance to level matters with five minutes left on the clock but Christian Saile headed straight into the grateful arms of Chaine from close-range.

It was a sixth defeat in eight league games for Siwelele and they look to bounce back when host Marumo Gallants on Sunday.
