The majority of the South African squad that competed in the regional tournament were under the age of 23, and guided the team to a record 11th final.
Speaking to SABC Sport, Mthandi said the youngsters injected fresh energy and healthy competition into the squad.
“I’m very impressed with how the youngsters played. They have energy, they are brave,
creative and hungry for game time. This has called for the standard to rise, even for the senior players. I am happy with the healthy competition they have brought to the team,” said Mthandi.
Banyana won four of their five matches in the tournament, suffering their only defeat in the final against Namibia. Despite missing out on the trophy, Mthandi believes the team earned respect for their spirited performances.
“We were united throughout the tournament and showed character. You could see that we were hungry to win. Yes, we fell short when it came to winning the trophy, but I believe we won the hearts of the people,” she added.
The Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies star also captained the national team for the first time in the final against the Brave Gladiators, describing the moment as unforgettable.
“I thought I was dreaming. Imagine me leading the national team - I could not contain my excitement. It was an unforgettable experience."
