Sekhukhune coach Brandon Truter wary of brazen, youthful Stellenbosch

Sekhukhune United coach Brandon Truter says he is wary of the threat posed by the youthful Stellenbosch FC outfit when the two sides meet in the semifinal of the Nedbank Cup on Sunday.

According to Truter, the side from the Winelands boast a squad made up mostly of academy players who play without fear, which he believes is one of their key strengths.

"With youth, you never know what you're going to get on the day. I think they are very dynamic, you can see the speed that's in there, [as well as] the talent and potential," said Truter.

"But it's whatever happens in this game, those boys will learn from it and it will build their careers going forward. In terms of us, managing it with experience and maturity, I think that experience is absolutely invaulable for us."

Truter adds that Sekhukhune also can’t ignore the in-form Iqraam Rayners, who has 15 goals in 11 games since re-joining Stellies from SuperSport Unietd in January.

"Iqraam, I think, is back with his father figure [Coach Steve Barker], he's back in a club where he knows the environment, and he enjoyed working there prior to his move to SuperSport – he also had the same form," noted 'Brakkies'.

"But for us to give special attention to him, there's also [Junior] Mendieta, [Devon] Titus, Jayden Adams and Ox [Sibusiso Mthethwa] in the midfield as well, so they have very capable players.

"We have very experienced players, in terms of [Daniel] Cardoso and Eddie Gyimah, and in defence we also have the number-one right-back [Nyiko Mobbie] in there as well.

"I think it's about the space, shutting him [Rayners] down in the spaces he wants to play and, look, their front three have tremendous speed in them too, but without space, speed can't be that effective. So, the experience in our defence will manage their front-three."
