Msibi admits overconfidence hurt Chippa as early 2026 promise gives way to relegation fight

Chippa United’s run in their last four Betway Premiership showed overconfidence that has led to a lack of concentration, according to the team’s number one goalkeeper, Dumisani Msibi.

The Chilli Boys suffered their third defeat, losing 4-1 to Mamelodi Sundowns on Friday, a result that leaves them just hovering above the relegation zone.

Chippa have started the year on a good note, picking up three wins in a row, and it looked like the top eight was within reach for them, but Msibi agrees with his head coach, Vusumuzi “Kanu” Vilakazi, on the lack of concentration that has creeped in...

"Over confidence is what causes us to have lapses in concentration sometimes. I think we are over confident in such a way that we do not see ourselves making mistakes and once you reach that stage you are vulnerable."

At some stage, it looked like Chippa United would come back in this game, especially after pulling one goal before halftime, but the wheels came off later in the second half as they conceded two more goals.

Msibi says they were let down by lapses of concentration...

"It's a bitter pill to swallow, but now we have to sit down and really go back to the drawing board. Had we not lost concentration, I don't think we would've conceded those goals against Sundowns because the coach's plan was 100% and spot on.

"The bottom line of our game against Sundowns was the lack of concentration in key moments."

But something good happened before these losses, and Msibi was very much part of it, as the Chilli Boys kept six clean sheets, a run that included three wins and three draws and saw them moving off the bottom of the log.

As they look forward to their next two home matches, starting with Siwelele FC on Tuesday and Polokwane City next weekend, Msibi says they need to focus on the positives from the Sundowns loss and build on them...

"I believe in this team, and I believe this team can beat Sundowns. Chippa can beat any team at any given time if we can just go back to our priorities and what we are looking for in each and every game."
