News emerged this week that Mokwena had resigned from his position in Libya after just over six months in charge with sources close to the coach citing differences over the club's transfer strategy and long-term vision as the main reasons behind his decision to step down.
His exit marks another short stint abroad after leaving Moroccan side Mouloudia Club d'Alger earlier than expected, despite having the club on course for the league title.
Mokwena had joined Al-Ittihad believing he would oversee a long-term project after being given significant influence over football matters, including the freedom to appoint members of his own technical team.
Several South African staff members followed him to Libya, having previously worked with him in both the Betway Premiership and elsewhere on the continent.
However, the public broadcaster understands the coach quickly realised that expectations and the club's ability to deliver on key promises were not aligned, prompting his decision to resign.
With Al-Ittihad yet to officially announce his departure, Mokwena has already been linked with a move to Pyramids FC – among other possibilities – who are understood to have admired him for some time.
Information gathered by the public broadcaster indicates the 39-year-old is not considering a return to the Premier Soccer League at this stage. Instead, he is expected to hold discussions with several clubs in North Africa and the Gulf region before deciding on the next chapter of his coaching career.
While Pyramids remain one of the clubs to watch, SABC Sport understands no final decision has yet been made.
