Milan Badelj bids emotional farewell to Genoa after five-year journey

Genoa have lost a key figure in their midfield as Milan Badelj confirmed his departure from the club after five memorable seasons.

The 36-year-old Croatian, who captained the Griffins through highs and lows, including a stint in Serie B, shared a touching farewell letter on the club's official channels, reflecting on his deep bond with the team and their passionate supporters.

In his heartfelt message, Badelj said: "Thank you, Genoa. It took us some time to truly get to know each other, and we've been through both good and challenging moments. But my feeling is that we've always had mutual affection.

"The word 'Genoa' will never leave me indifferent when I think about our colours. I'll carry all the memories from the stadium in my heart and am deeply grateful for your unforgettable support. I have felt privileged, and I will be forever thankful to you for that."

Badelj also expressed gratitude to the wider Genoa family, adding: "I would like to thank our team, the entire Genoa family, all the presidents, directors and coaches, my teammates, the medical staff, physiotherapists, fitness trainers, team manager, and the warehouse workers, as well as everyone who does their utmost to protect us in the best possible way."

The midfielder's journey with Genoa began in 2020 when they signed him from Lazio for 1.95 million euros. Over his tenure, Badelj became a cornerstone of the squad, making 155 appearances, scoring seven goals, and providing 13 assists across all competitions.

His leadership and composure on the ball were vital during Genoa's promotion from Serie B in the 2022-23 season.
