Mikel Arteta hails Arsenal talisman Declan Rice as 'one of the best in the world'

Mikel Arteta hailed Declan Rice as one of the world's best midfielders after the England international scored twice in Arsenal's 3-2 comeback win over Bournemouth, a result that moved the Gunners six points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Rice had been an injury doubt after missing Arsenal's previous match against Aston Villa with a swollen knee, but recovered in time to start at the Vitality Stadium and went on to play the full match. His second-half brace proved decisive after Arsenal fell behind early.

Bournemouth opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Evanilson capitalised on a mistake by Gabriel Magalhaes, but the defender responded by netting the equaliser six minutes later. Rice then struck twice after the interval to put Arsenal 3-1 ahead before Junior Kroupi's 76th-minute long-range goal ensured a tense finish.

"Declan was struggling in the last few days but pushed himself to be available," Arteta said. "Every hour was important. To play the whole game, score two goals and perform like that sends a big message."

The goals were Rice's first Premier League brace despite more than 230 appearances in the competition, and only the second time in his senior club career he has scored twice in a match. Arteta said the midfielder continues to evolve following his 105 million pound move from West Ham in 2023.

"Declan is constantly adding things to his game and his role in the team," Arteta added. "For me, he is one of the best midfielders in the world."

Rice said the victory was vital as Arsenal look to maintain momentum during a congested run of fixtures. "The win over Aston Villa would have meant nothing if we didn't win today," he said. "We're in a really good position, but we have to keep building."

Arsenal's victory extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to six points, while Bournemouth were left empty-handed despite a late rally.
