Spain face the defending champions at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey as they chase their first World Cup title since lifting the trophy in South Africa in 2010. Luis de la Fuente's side arrive in the final full of confidence after adding the 2024 European Championship to an impressive run of recent success.
Cucurella has been one of Spain's key performers throughout the tournament, playing every minute of their World Cup campaign. The left-back, who joined Real Madrid from Chelsea this summer in a deal worth 51.8 million pounds, has become one of de la Fuente's most trusted players.
Speaking before the final, Cucurella made an extraordinary promise about his international future if Spain are crowned world champions.
"If we win the World Cup, I'll call Luis the next day and tell him not to count on me anymore, that I'm retiring from the national team," he said.
"With a European Championship and a World Cup, I can't do any better."
The defender also joked that he has another special tribute planned for his manager if Spain lift the trophy.
"I would get a little tattoo of Spain manager Luis de la Fuente's face on my bicep if we were to win the World Cup," he said.
Cucurella is only days away from celebrating his 28th birthday, making his retirement pledge even more surprising. If he followed through with it, he would step away from international football while still in the prime of his career.
