Manuel Neuer set for comeback as Bayern prepare for Real Madrid clash

Manuel Neuer is set to make his long-awaited return from injury, handing FC Bayern Munich a major boost ahead of a crucial stretch of the season.

According to reports in Germany, the Bayern captain is expected to be back in goal for next week's Bundesliga clash against SC Freiburg after missing the last four matches with a muscle injury. His return comes at a vital time, with Bayern preparing for a high-stakes UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie against Real Madrid in April.

Neuer, who recently turned 40, has been working on his recovery at Bayern's training base and is now back to full fitness. The experienced goalkeeper is expected to play a key role across both legs against Madrid, although the club are carefully managing his workload.

Backup goalkeeper Jonas Urbig is also nearing a return after a knee issue forced him to withdraw from international duty. The 22-year-old could feature in the Bundesliga match against FC St. Pauli on 11 April, potentially allowing Neuer to rest between European fixtures.

Off the pitch, Neuer has asked Bayern's hierarchy to delay discussions about his future until he has fully assessed his physical condition. The club have agreed to his request, with no decision expected before the second leg against Real Madrid in mid-April.

Sporting director Christoph Freund confirmed that talks remain ongoing but stressed patience. "There's always an exchange with Manuel, which is very good," he said. "Let's see what April and May will bring. What's important is what his gut feeling and his body tell him."

Former Germany goalkeeper Andreas Kopke also backed Neuer to continue. "I believe he'll play for another year, and I would like that," he said. "It would be good for Urbig to keep learning from him and grow into that role."

For Bayern, Neuer's return could not have come at a better time.
