Manqoba Mngqithi backs Sundowns for title despite Pirates pressure

Golden Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi believes defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns remain the favourites to retain the Betway Premiership title, despite the growing challenge from Orlando Pirates.

Speaking after The Brazilians finished their 2-1 win over Arrows at Loftus Stadium on Wednesday night with 10 men following Jayden Adams’ red card, Mngqithi argued they had enough depth to see them through.

The coach, who won several league titles during his time with Sundowns, explained why he believes his former club are ahead.

"I've always believed that Sundowns have got what it takes to win the league and Ive always said it. I'm not mincing my words, because even if you look at the players who weren't on the bench, that team has got what it takes.

"I like the competition that Pirates is bringing, but the reality is this team has got depth."

On his side’s performance, Mngqithi admitted they stood no chance against Sundowns despite beating them in the corresponding fixture in Durban earlier this season.

Mngqithi sees a lot of improvement in his Arrows team this season.

With Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie again confirming plans for VAR next season, Mngqithi argues it should be implemented immediately.

"Next season is too far. The game is becoming too dynamic for the referees. I expect the right thing to happen in a football match, but every week we'll be talking about this topic because we are running one of the biggest leagues in the continent and thus, we should understand the investment that goes into these clubs, and all the investment that goes into training should be worth accepting the result, but we are seeing mistakes regularly."
