Makgopa, Mbatha reveal Bafana's fearless approach in South Korea win

Bafana Bafana striker Evidence Makgopa says the team's approach against South Korea was to impose themselves from the outset rather than sit back in their decisive FIFA World Cup Group A clash in Monterrey.

South Africa secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory to finish second behind co-hosts Mexico, with Thapelo Maseko's 63rd-minute strike sealing a place in the round of 32.

Handed his first start of the tournament, Makgopa revealed the thinking behind Hugo Broos' tactical plan as Bafana produced a disciplined display at the Estadio Monterrey to keep their World Cup campaign alive.

"Going into this game we had simple tactics, go out there play our normal football and stay focused," said Makgopa.

Teammate Thalente Mbatha also explained that Broos had instructed them to avoid conceding early like they’d done against Mexico and Czechia in previous matches.

"For us we believed that we had the stamina and the legs to go all out. So the coach told us not to concede until the water break and we will be able to counterattack, as you saw we were breaking through their lines and they were playing with three. We told our wingers Oswin and Maseko to stay wide all the time, because whenever we get the ball, they will be our outlets," said Mbatha.

Bafana missed an avalanche of chances and Makgopa was among the culprits, but he says the key was to not become dejected.

"I think dropping the head during the game can kill your game. I think you have to remain focused and continue. I also missed a chance but I had to keep going and stay focused. That's very important," added Makgopa.

South Africa now switch focus to Sunday’s game in Inglewood with Mbatha adamant that anything can happen from here onwards.
