Liverpool sign Ronald Araujo on loan from Barcelona with permanent option

The agreement does not include a loan fee, with Liverpool taking responsibility for the Uruguay international's wages. Araujo has also accepted a reduction in salary to make the transfer possible, while the deal contains an option for the Reds to sign him permanently this time next year for around 47.1 million pounds

Araujo will wear the No. 33 shirt at Anfield and arrives after a difficult period at Barcelona, where his role diminished considerably despite having signed a new contract until 2031.

The 27-year-old made only 11 LaLiga starts last season as Hansi Flick increasingly relied on Pau Cubarsi, Eric Garcia and Gerard Martin in central defence. His limited involvement followed a combination of injuries, loss of form and a period away from football to focus on his mental health.

Araujo subsequently revealed that he had experienced anxiety for around 18 months before developing depression. He was granted time away from Barcelona in December 2025 before returning to training the following month.

His arrival nevertheless gives Liverpool a defender with considerable top-level experience. Araujo has made more than 200 appearances for Barcelona since joining from Uruguayan club Boston River in 2018 and helped the Catalan side win three LaLiga titles and two Copa del Rey trophies.

He was also included in Barcelona's leadership group and briefly took on greater responsibility following the departure of goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Liverpool's need for defensive reinforcements has been heightened by a combination of departures and injuries. Ibrahima Konate left for Real Madrid on a free transfer, while Joe Gomez, Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet have all had fitness concerns.

Captain Virgil van Dijk had been the only fully fit senior centre-back available to Iraola at one stage of pre-season, with the manager forced to use teenage defender Ifeanyi Ndukwe alongside him during the 3-2 friendly defeat by Monaco.

Araujo should therefore provide immediate competition and experience at the back. Standing at 6ft 3in, he is primarily a centre-back but can also operate at right-back, having previously been used in that position by Barcelona in matches against Real Madrid.

The defender is also looking to use the move as an opportunity to revive his career after becoming increasingly peripheral at Barcelona.

"I think it was the ideal move for me at this stage in my career. I think it was a move that was necessary for me to take," Araujo told Liverpool's club media.

"As soon as I heard that interest from Liverpool, everything went into action really, really quickly.

"I'm super-happy to be here and excited to get started. I'm glad about the interest and it was the right move at the right time."

Araujo joined Barcelona's reserve side in 2018 and made his senior debut the following year, eventually establishing himself as one of the club's most prominent defenders.

He has earned 27 Uruguay caps and was selected by Marcelo Bielsa for the World Cup, although he did not feature as Uruguay exited during the group stage.

His international team-mate Darwin Nunez, who previously played for Liverpool, welcomed the move on social media and told Araujo that the Anfield supporters would make him feel at home.

Liverpool begin their Premier League season away to Newcastle United on August 23, with Araujo now in contention to provide Iraola with a much-needed boost to his defensive ranks.
