Arthur Zwane critical of AmaZulu’s defensive display in MTN8 loss

Usuthu made a bright start and took an early advantage through Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya, but Zwane believes they failed to make their early control count and allowed Babina Noko to turn the game around, conceding goals from mistakes made by his charges.

The AmaZulu coach has described the clash at Chatsworth Stadium as one of the worst defensive performances he has witnessed from his team.

“I’ve never seen such horrible defending from our side but it’s one of those that we can learn from. I think we gave them manna from heaven. The player got the ball here and he runs all the way and finish. When we had three other defenders on him, I told them he is left-footed, force him to go to his right, don’t allow him to go inside," said Zwane

Despite their defensive struggles, AmaZulu showed character to recover from behind and level the score at 3-3. Zwane believes that was the moment his team needed to take control and finish the contest.

With the new campaign still in its early stages, the coach says the club could look to strengthen defensively, particularly with pace an important requirement. He has also relied on Riaan Hanamub in central defence at times, with the defender’s speed giving him another option at the back.

Zwane has also praised Ngwenya after he continued his strong return from injury. The 23-year-old had an injury-disrupted 2025/26 campaign but finished as AmaZulu’s leading scorer with eight goals in all competitions.

Ngwenya has quickly made an impact again this season, with three goals in two matches,  and Zwane says while he is pleased to have the striker fit and among the goals, there is still another level he wants from his forward.

Zwane has provided an update on midfielder Hendrick Ekstein, who remains sidelined with an injury. The coach says Ekstein could still be around three weeks away from returning, with his absence leaving the team without an important creative option.

The former Kaizer Chiefs coach now turns his attention to a demanding league assignment against defending champions Orlando Pirates. 

AmaZulu are scheduled to host the Buccaneers on Wednesday night, with the match taking place at Kings Park Stadium in Durban.

Zwane knows the reigning champions will present another stern test.
