The 38-year-old is currently unattached after officially leaving Wydad Athletic Club in Morocco early last month, returning home for a short break while assessing his next move with his representatives.
Pyramids are fresh from winning the CAF Champions League title having beaten Mamelodi Sundowns 3-2 on aggregate, however shortly after what he called his greatest achievement – coach Krunoslav Jurcic was surprisingly vague about whether he’d stay on in the job.
“I have to sit down with people from the club, I personally have big ambitions so I have to sit down with members from the club, because if they have big ambitions, then we can continue this project into the future,” the Croation mentor said in part.
While it is not yet clear whether Jurcic will continue or leave the Egyptian outfit, the public broadcaster has it on good authority that his employers are already assessing a possible target to take over.
Pyramids are understood to have slipped into the country to speak to Mokwena about their project next season and beyond.
The coach has made it clear that he does not want to be out of work for too long and would consider any offer being tabled.
Zamalek are the most recent team to approach Mokwena, but the former Sundowns mentor pulled out of talks because his mentor Pitso Mosimane was also in the running for the same gig.
It now remains to be seen whether Mokwena will fancy returning to North Africa following what he admitted was a “difficult” spell in Morocco with Wydad, who will feature in the FIFA Club World Cup this month under a new coach.
