Walker, now 35, spent eight seasons with City, winning six Premier League titles, a Champions League, and six domestic cups. He also captained the side during his later years before leaving on loan to AC Milan last season, followed by a permanent move to newly promoted Burnley.
Pep Guardiola paid tribute to the England international ahead of his return, calling him one of the finest full-backs to play the game. "Absolutely, one of the greatest fullbacks ever," Guardiola said.
"When you had to control that side with the wingers, I slept like a baby before the games with Kyle there. He could handle top, top-class wingers in the world with his speed."
The City manager even placed Walker in the same bracket as legends Cafu, Javier Zanetti and Lilian Thuram. Guardiola added: "An incredible figure in the locker room, always being there in the good and the bad moments.
"Of course last season was tough for him, but I don't like to judge one behaviour for a short period of time. He was unbelievable."
Walker's departure marked the end of a decorated spell in Manchester, where his leadership and consistency made him a key figure in one of City's most dominant eras.
Meanwhile, Guardiola confirmed that Erling Haaland is fit to play after a minor back problem forced him off during the 1-1 draw at Arsenal last weekend. "He is ready," Guardiola said.
Burnley, boosted by Walker's experience, will be aiming to test the champions on what promises to be an emotional afternoon at the Etihad.
