A nine-man Bafana went down 2-0 to Mexico in the opening FIFA 2026 World Cup game at the Estadio Azteca.
Khumalo was part of the 2010 World Cup legends team who were in Mexico and watched the game from the stands. He feels that some of the players struggled to adapt to the stage...
"The World Cup comes with heavy weight in terms of emotions and sometimes that can be quite overwhelming. Fair enough we lost 2-0 but we are still in the tournament. We have two games to go and I believe we can still get it back. We'll have top come out of our shells just a little bit more."
Bafana Bafana will go into their next game against Czechia—who also lost their opening game 2-1 to South Korea, without the services of Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane, who were both sent off in the opening game.
Another area that Bafana Bafana should be concerned with now, is the goal difference, as this would be key in deciding the best third placed teams in all the groups.
Just three points could be enough for passage to the knockout phase, but the goal difference will also be a factor. Another Bafana Bafana legend Surprise Moriri, believes that the boys can still recover from this setback...
"This is not how we expected to start but we must not lose hope. It's just a shame that we got those two red cards. The boys just have to regroup and hopefully we get some points in the next two games."
The tactical approach from the head coach Hugo Broos and his technical team was designed to contain the Mexicans, and Moriri says the biggest challenge was on the offensive phase of the game, something that should be rectified for the Czechia game.
