Kgaelebane Mohlakoana eager to represent South Africa at upcoming WAFCON

Banyana Banyana striker Kgaelebane Mohlakoana is eager to feature in the final squad to defend this year’s Women’s Africa Cup Nations.

Mohlakoana last played in the continental showpiece in 2018 when South Africa finished as runners-up.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Mohlakoana says she will continue to work hard to help meet the coach’s expectations.

"First of all, I will be happy if I got to be in the team that will be playing in the AFCON because the last time I played in the AFCON it was 2018 when we were playing in Ghana. So, I'm looking forward to being in the squad, I will really appreciate that. I just need to work hard so I can give the coach what she expects from me," Mohlakoane said.

Banyana have wrapped up their COSAFA friendlies, having secured the Three-Nation Cup on home soil.

The national team coach trimmed her preliminary squad from 46 to 28 players last night and Mohlakoana, who is still part of the squad says they now have to go back to the drawing board to fine-tune their WAFCON preparations.

"We just have to work hard and work as a team, not individually. We just have to work hard and fix those mistakes that we did in the previous friendly game that we had played. I'm looking forward to it, we just have to be united, motivate each other, encourage each other inside the field and do what the coach expects from us."

Mohlakoana believes that individual brilliance and experience will set the team apart in their WAFCON defence.

"In terms of us going forward, we just have us as strikers. We also have experienced strikers in front, the best in Africa, so those who are also playing abroad. So, if we have that combination in front I think we will be able to win the game and do what we do best in scoring goals for the team to win."
