Kaizer Chiefs held by Marumo Gallants in Heritage Day stalemate

Kaizer Chiefs were left frustrated on Heritage Day after being held to a 1-1 draw by Marumo Gallants in their Betway Premiership clash at FNB Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Interim coaches Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef rang the changes, opting for a 3-4-3 system to manage workloads ahead of a crucial CAF Confederation Cup qualifying tie.

The rotation included a debut for new signing Khanyisa Mayo, recently recruited from CR Belouizdad. The forward marked the occasion with the opening goal, poaching from close range to give Amakhosi the early advantage.

Chiefs could have doubled their lead just before half-time when Gaston Sirino stepped up from the penalty spot, but his effort was superbly saved by Gallants' veteran goalkeeper Washington Arubi. That miss proved costly after the interval.

Gallants, guided by coach Alexandre Lafite, found their equaliser through off-season acquisition Jaisen Clifford. The winger cut in from the left and unleashed a curling strike into the top right corner, leaving Brandon Petersen helpless.

The result extends Chiefs' winless streak to three matches in all competitions, following a 3-1 league defeat to leaders Sekhukhune United and a 1-0 setback against Kubascorp.

Despite their unbeaten start to the campaign, Amakhosi's recent dip sees them remain in third place with 14 points from seven matches.

Gallants, meanwhile, will take heart from the display, with Clifford's strike securing them a valuable away point that lifts them to ninth in the standings on 10 points from eight games.
