Nolusindiso Booi foresees bright future for SA Women’s rugby

Outgoing Springbok Women’s captain Nolusindiso Booi believes the future of South African women’s rugby is bright after leading the national team into the world’s top ten rankings.

This comes after South Africa bowed out of the Women’s Rugby World Cup in the quarterfinals for the first time at the recently concluded tournament in England.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Booi said this was her best World Cup experience, having played in four since her debut in 2010.

“I would say it was the best World Cup, with great preparations and great performances in the history of Springbok Women," said Booi.

"Reaching the quarterfinals was our goal, and going to the World Cup as the 12th-ranked team and ending up in the top 10 in the world rankings, and in the top eight at the 2025 World Cup, is special.

"Beating Italy was massive for us, and giving New Zealand a tough game was good. Our national team has a bright future ahead."

The 40-year-old hangs up her boots after earning 55 caps for the national team and featuring in four World Cups.

She says she never imagined accessing such great opportunities in her career.

“I never imagined that at all. The only thing that helped me experience four World Cups in my lifetime is that I never gave up on myself," she added.

"I’m so proud of myself and grateful for all the opportunities.”

The experienced lock also shared some advice for youngsters who look up to her and wish to follow in her footsteps.

She added that she will now take a break and spend more time with her family.

“Anything is possible in life if you want it fully.

More than anything, working hard can keep you going for longer, and you also need to remain humble.

I don’t want to think of anything for now. I just want to spend more time with my family,” Booi concluded.
