Chippa United set to trigger Thabo September’s two-year option

SABC Sport has been reliably informed that Chippa United will activate the option to extend coach Thabo September’s contract by a further two years.

September initially signed an 18-month deal as a co-coach along with Kwanele Kopo last January, and took sole charge of the team at the beginning of this year after Kopo left the club.

Under September, the Eastern Cape-based side has managed to not only avoid relegation, but they’re also just a game away from potentially confirming a top-eight finish this season.

According to a source close to the situation, the coach has had talks with the chairman and has been guaranteed his job, and all that’s left is a letter confirming the extension with the numbers already agreed upon.

The tipster went on to say that the club’s boss Chippa Mpengesi wants to get more experience to help the young coach navigate the demands of top-flight football, and could even go the route of head coach and senior coach, a model that has been made famous by Mamelodi Sundowns in the PSL.
They will also be keeping Mabhudi Khenyeza on as assistant, with Morgan Mammila continuing to oversee all of the club’s structures as the Sporting Director.
We also understand that the club currently does not have a permanent team doctor or even a masseuse, which has become critical in modern-day football for high performance.
Chippa have lost their last four games in a row, two of which were against champions Sundowns, and will need a win in their last game of the season away at Marumo Gallants this weekend to strengthen their chances of a top eight finish.
