Barcelona's well-known financial limits have forced the club to focus on recruiting young talent with high potential, and the winter transfer window saw the Catalans strengthen their reserve side, Barca Atletic, with several targeted additions. Onstein now looks set to become the latest arrival.
The highly rated young centre-back was recently spotted at Spotify Camp Nou during Barcelona's victory over FC Copenhagen, a clear signal that negotiations were in their final stages.
Onstein then appeared to confirm the move himself through a farewell message to Genk supporters.
"Genk has been an important part of my journey - a place where I learned, fought, made mistakes, and grew, both as a player and as a person," he wrote.
He also thanked those who supported him during his development, adding: "I am truly grateful to everyone who has been part of this path: the staff, my teammates, and all those who believed in me, even during the difficult moments."
The defender admitted the decision had not been easy but felt the timing was right.
"The most important decisions are never the easiest, but I feel that this is the right time to open a new chapter in my career and in my life. Thank you Genk."
An official announcement from both clubs was expected shortly, with Onstein set to begin his Barcelona career with the youth side. However, club insiders believed the signing had been made with long-term first-team ambitions in mind.
If he adapted quickly to Barcelona's playing style, Onstein could soon push for opportunities at senior level, underlining why the club moved swiftly to secure one of Europe's promising young defenders.
