The performance sparked debate, with former Chelsea and Liverpool winger Joe Cole insisting the Gunners should have signed Victor Osimhen instead.
Osimhen, who joined Galatasaray permanently this season after a loan spell, scored an impressive 37 goals in 41 matches to help the Turkish side claim the league title. Cole argued Osimhen's proven scoring record across different leagues made him the better choice for Arsenal's attack.
"I think this might be Arteta's best shot at the title," Cole told Hayters TV when discussing Arsenal's chances. "They've brought in a centre-forward, but there's still uncertainty. If they had signed Osimhen, who's shown he can score in Italy and Turkey, it'd be different.
"Gyokeres might be alright, he'll likely score goals, but there's still a question mark. Liverpool look like the team to beat right now."
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta defended Gyokeres, pointing to team-wide issues rather than individual failings. "He did a lot of things well," Arteta said after the match.
"Our high press and rhythm weren't sharp enough in the first half, giving United too much time. We didn't get the final ball right to exploit his qualities. But winning away at Manchester United in his first game is a good start."
The Gunners also signed Noni Madueke from Chelsea this summer, but the winger faces competition from Bukayo Saka on the right.
Cole, however, backed Madueke to shine, potentially on the left flank. "Noni is a very, very good player," Cole said. "He played well on the left for Chelsea last season, showing power and the ability to get wide.
"With Martinelli's injuries and Trossard not always impacting games, Madueke's a great signing. He can play both wings and will improve their squad."
