Jessica Wade targets final WAFCON squad after Banyana Banyana recall

Jessica Wade has expressed her gratitude after earning a recall to the Banyana Banyana squad and says she is determined to secure a place in the final squad for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Wade has been named in coach Desiree Ellis’ 38-member preliminary squad for the upcoming alignment camp ahead of the COSAFA Women’s Championship and WAFCON preparations.

Speaking to SABC Sport, the 22-year-old described her return to the national setup as a proud moment and admits she is eager to feature in the upcoming continental competitions.

“It’s always an honour to be selected to represent South Africa and I’m excited ahead of such crucial tournaments. Of course, I would love to feature in both competitions, but I’m not sure what the arrangements will be, especially with the international break only starting on 24 February, which doesn’t leave much time before the first COSAFA fixture,” said Wade.

Wade says her ultimate ambition is to be part of the final WAFCON squad and contribute towards Banyana Banyana’s title push.

“I would like to be in the final WAFCON squad and help us hopefully win the competition. It’s good to be ambitious and to have goals, but right now I’m focused on keeping my head down and putting in the work. The rest is not entirely up to me.” added Wade.

The former JVW FC midfielder enjoyed a standout domestic campaign, playing a key role in the club’s return to the top three of the Hollywoodbets Super League since 2023, as they finished runners-up last season.

“I think overall JVW had an incredibly memorable season. We played some beautiful football and earned a hard-fought second place. I was happy to have played my part, but the credit goes to my teammates and coaches who believed in me and pushed me,” said Wade.

Now based in Finland with Aland United, Wade admits the transition to life abroad has come with challenges but says she is embracing the experience as she continues to develop her game.

“It’s always a challenge moving countries – a new way of life, new language, new people, and a different setup with new expectations. But I’m settling in, putting in the work, and staying focused on improving every day,” she expressed.
