The 46-year-old will become the first referee from Slovenia to take charge of a men's World Cup final. He will be assisted by Tomaz Klancnik and Andraz Kovacic for the historic clash between the reigning European champions and South American champions.
FIFA released a video showing the moment Vincic was told of his appointment. The experienced official was visibly emotional, putting his hands to his head before breaking down in tears.
Speaking about the appointment, Vincic admitted it was a dream come true.
"First of all, a shock. Then happiness. I was shaking, so it's an incredible honour to get the World Cup final," he said.
"It's only a dream for a referee, for a young referee when they start. So, I'm very proud, very proud of myself and my team."
Vincic also spoke about what it means to represent his country on football's biggest stage.
"It's very difficult to put everything into words, but I'm very proud to represent my country, Slovenia, in the biggest sporting event in the world," he said.
"My team is very proud, and we will do our best."
Vincic has built an impressive career since becoming a FIFA international referee in 2010. He officiated at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar before taking charge of the 2024 UEFA Champions League final between Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid.
His first World Cup match in Qatar was Argentina's shock group-stage defeat to Saudi Arabia. This weekend, he returns to oversee the biggest match in international football as Argentina attempt to win another world title against a Spain side chasing global glory.
