I’m ready for a new challenge – Yaya Sithole hints at exit from Portugal

Bafana Bafana midfielder Sphephelo Sithole has confirmed he is open to leaving Portugal, either to pursue a move elsewhere abroad or return home to join one of the PSL’s so-called big three clubs.

Despite recently signing a new contract with CD Tondela that runs until June 2027, the midfielder – affectionately known as “Yaya” – says he is ready for a new challenge.

Speaking to travelling SA journalists from the team hotel in Marrakesh during the Africa Cup of Nations, Sithole explained the motivation behind his desire to move on.

"After this tournament, I'd like to get a better opportunity to go and play somewhere else because I've been in Portugal for the last eight years. If everything goes well, a move is going to happen."

Sithole also spoke about being motivated ahead of facing Cameroon in the last 16 after being subbed at halftime against Zimbabwe for a lacklustre performance.

"It motivates me a lot because sometimes as player you need to be honest with yourself. When the coach calls on me again, I'll be more than ready."

‘Yaya’ added that Cameroon is an ideal opponent for Bafana to see if they have what it takes to go all the way at the AFCON.

Sithole also reflected on Bafana’s unbeaten run ending with defeat to Egypt, saying tournament football allows little time to fix mistakes but offers valuable lessons ahead of the FIFA World Cup.
