Tennis superstar Rafael Nadal set for shock move into Real Madrid boardroom

Tennis great Rafael Nadal is set to take up a position on Real Madrid's board of directors after the club agreed to put his appointment forward for approval by its members.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion was invited to join the board following a meeting on November 4. Real Madrid confirmed that the decision would be presented to the General Assembly of Delegated Members for ratification.

Nadal, who is already an honorary member of the club, was praised for his sporting achievements and personal qualities.

"It is a source of immense pride for Real Madrid and for all our supporters that a figure of his sporting and personal stature is to join our Board of Directors," the club said in a statement.

The 39-year-old Spaniard won 92 singles titles during his tennis career, claimed two Olympic gold medals and helped Spain win the Davis Cup five times. He also spent time as the world's number one player before retiring in November 2024.

Real Madrid highlighted Nadal's humility, respect for opponents and commitment to charitable causes, saying those qualities reflected the club's identity.

Nadal welcomed the opportunity, thanking president Florentino Perez and the board for their invitation.

"I have accepted this invitation with great enthusiasm, keen to learn and to contribute as much as I can," he wrote on social media.

Nadal has previously been linked with the possibility of succeeding Perez as Real Madrid president, although he has played down suggestions that he could eventually take on the role.
