Hugo Broos on Lesotho friendly: “It wasn’t good, it wasn’t bad”

Although Bafana Bafana’s goalless draw against Lesotho in their final preparation match before the AFCON was met with public disapproval, coach Hugo Broos is keeping his eyes on the main prize.

The national team mentor named a line-up without goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, defender Mothobi Mvala and attacker Themba Zwane as they are carrying injuries and still under observation.

But Broos said he wasn’t dissatisfied with the stalemate.

"It was not bad, it was not good either but again I said before the game, this is a preparation game. We had hard work the last three, four days and I think we needed a little bit more freshness to beat Lesotho but I'm not unhappy, certainly not," Broos said.

Bafana face Mali in their opener in Còte d’Ivoire on 16 January, and Broos told SAFA media he was happy to give everyone a chance to play – with the exception of those who were omitted as precaution.

"Everyone had the opportunity to play, so, I think what we wanted to see and what we wanted to do today that we have done it. It will not have an influence that is for sure but we liked to win the game today. Everybody will tell us about 0-0 against Lesotho but you have to see the circumstances and again, as I said before the game, this is not even a friendly game for me, this is a preparation game," Broos added.

Among the concerns when Bafana announced a match against Lesotho was whether it would be enough of a test.

Broos, who is confident Mvala will be cleared to feature, admitted the challenge that follows next week will be different.

"In a few other days that will be different, we will be different, we will be better and that is the most important thing. They [Mvala] will travel with me because we have the guarantee of the medical staff that he will be ready."
