Hugo Broos’ expectations from the Lesotho game?

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos says he’s looking for more than just a result in today’s training match against Lesotho that will be played behind closed doors at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville later this afternoon.

As Bafana prepares for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, which gets underway this coming weekend, Broos says this is the continuation of their preparation programme.

This is the only warm-up match that Bafana will play ahead of their opening game against Mali in Korhogo, Ivory Coast next Tuesday.

"I know that maybe we didn't look at the game of tomorrow. For me, it's not even a friendly game it's a preparation game. So, this is a game to prepare for what will follow next week which means that for me the result is not so important tomorrow. Even in the worst scenario that we should lose, it will not be for me a moment to doubt or criticise. I know what we have done the last four days," Broos said.

Broos says he would love to see his players getting that winning feeling in this game as they try to build momentum to the opening game and this is a match where he could also be testing his starting line-up, obviously minus his captain Ronwen Williams.

"And it is possible the only thing I want to see tomorrow is that players want to win the game, that's all and if we are able to, we will win it. If we are not because of the fatigue, okay but it's also good. Again, it's a preparation game for me and that's the most important thing," the coach explained.

Lesotho held Nigeria and Benin to one-all and goalless draws respectively in the 2026 FIFA World Cup opening qualifiers two months ago.

Bafana Bafana are also in the same group but will meet the neighbours only next year in the qualifiers.
