Hilton-Smith expects Banyana to set the tone in WAFCON opener

Former SAFA Technical Director of Women’s Football, Fran Hilton-Smith says its crucial for Banyana Banyana to win their opening Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Group B clash against Tanzania to set the tone for the rest of the tournament.

South Africa have been drawn in Group B alongside Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and Tanzania. They will face Tanzania at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca on 27 July.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Hilton-Smith believes coach Desiree Ellis and her charges face a difficult challenge, but says a victory in the opening match will provide a significant confidence boost.

“The first match is against Tanzania, and we need to win that game to set the tone for the rest of the tournament. Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and Tanzania are not easy teams. I keep saying that Group B is a tough group.

“All I can say is that we need mental fortitude to survive this group. We need to have a strong mentality throughout the tournament. I want Banyana to win the first match with confidence, particularly for the younger players,” said Hilton-Smith.

Banyana claimed their maiden WAFCON title in 2022 after defeating hosts Morocco 2-1 in the final at the Prince Moulay Abdallah Stadium. Hilton-Smith says she is grateful to have witnessed the historic triumph and believes the team can once again dominate the continent.

“We had been dominated by Nigeria for a long time in women’s football. I think that was the defining moment when we proved the quality we have in our team. I am grateful to have witnessed Banyana lifting the WAFCON trophy for the first time, and I believe they can dominate the continent again,” added Hilton-Smith.

The 2026 WAFCON will also serve as the continental qualification tournament for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. The veteran football administrator believes South Africa has what it takes to be among the four African nations that secures qualification.

“Without a doubt, with the right attitude, this team has the quality of players needed to qualify for the 2027 World Cup. We won the tournament in 2022 and reached the semi-finals last year. That shows we have the potential to do it again.”
