Hansi Flick commits future to Barcelona after title-winning campaign

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has confirmed he will extend his stay at Barcelona until 2028 after guiding the club to another La Liga title and continuing their domestic resurgence.

The 61-year-old German, whose current deal was set to run until 2027, revealed on Tuesday that an agreement has been reached for a one-year extension with the option of an additional season. The announcement follows Barcelona's title-clinching victory over rivals Real Madrid on Sunday, a result that moved the Catalan side onto an unassailable 91 points with three matches still to play.

Flick admitted the last few days had been emotional following the death of his father over the weekend, but said the support from the club convinced him he was "in the right place".

"In the last few days they showed me that I am here in the right place, and I really appreciate what they give me - all the people, to me and my team, and my family," Flick told reporters.

"I'm really happy about this. They have given me and my team the confidence to work one or two years more."

The former Bayern Munich and Germany coach said he prefers shorter-term agreements despite Barcelona reportedly being willing to offer a longer commitment.

"A lot of coaches would be happy if they get a contract of three, four or five years, but in Barca's case it's good to limit it," he said.

"We go to 2028 and then we'll see if everything is right and, if so, we can decide on one more year. The club has the right, and I have the right - I think it's a good deal."

Flick arrived at Barcelona in 2024 following his dismissal as Germany national team coach and quickly restored the club's dominance in Spanish football. Under his leadership, Barca have now secured back-to-back La Liga titles, while also lifting the Copa del Rey and successive Spanish Super Cups.

However, European success remains unfinished business after Barcelona were eliminated from this season's UEFA Champions League at the quarter-final stage by Atletico Madrid.

Flick made it clear that winning Europe's premier club competition remains a major objective.

"This is normal for Barca. I know everyone has this dream to win the Champions League. We will try again," he said.

"For next season, it is also a big commitment for us to work harder, even harder than this season, to reach the best level with the team and to win titles."

Despite already wrapping up the title race, Flick insists Barcelona will remain fully focused during the closing weeks of the campaign, with the team still targeting a 100-point season ahead of Wednesday's clash against Deportivo Alavas.

"The goal now is to reach 100 points, and to do that we have to win the three remaining matches and play well," he said.
