Godfrey Sapula pleased with Sundowns Ladies’ new signings ahead of title defence

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies coach Godfrey Sapula is pleased that the club’s latest signings align perfectly with the team’s profile as they prepare to defend their Hollywoodbets Super League title.

The Chloorkop-based side recently unveiled Wendy Shongwe from the University of Pretoria and Gugu Dlamini from the University of Johannesburg as part of their squad reinforcements ahead of the 2026 Super League season.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Sapula says the duo will not only make an impact at club level but also have the potential to contribute to the national team.

"We have been following the two players, that is Wendy Shongwe and Gugu Dlamini. When we made our squad analysis we recognised that we needed wingers who can play as a winger and striker and attacking midfield,” Scapula said.

“And we thought Wendy and Gugu meet the profile of the players that we need in line with reinforcing the squad so that we are able to sustain the success, defend the league title for 2026 season and also thinking about the contribution that they will give the team come COSAFA and CAF Champions League.

“We've been following the two players, they both have some experience when it comes to international football which is Banyana and yeah we highly rate the two players, we are hoping that they will definitely contribute to the ambitions of the club."

The 52-year-old mentor has also confirmed that the defending champions are still looking to add one more key signings before the start of the 2026 Hollywoodbets Super League campaign.

"We are hoping to sign maybe one more player you know but yeah at the moment we are not in a position to disclose the players that we are chasing and the positions that we want to reinforce but yeah, at least one more player we are looking to sign and maybe complete the signings for this season,” the coach added.
