Stellies saw off AmaZulu 1-0 at Danie Craven Stadium to win their second Betway Premiership match in a row and stretch their unbeaten run to four games in the domestic league, while rising to ninth place on the standings.
Hunt admitted that he was expecting an underwhelming performance from his team after their win over Kaizer Chiefs earlier in the week, and believes they are well on their way to the 30-point mark to secure their safety from relegation.
"I was expecting a bit of a downturn after Tuesday, but I thought in the first half we were good, and we started really bright and fresh, and we looked good," said Hunt.
"And then I said to them they [AmaZulu] will certainly have a little bit more impetus in the second half, which they did, and we still had some good opportunities to kill the game off, which we didn't do.
"That was a bit frustrating in the last five minutes, when it got a little bit helter skelter, but to win and get ourselves out of that relegation fight is [massive], and we've just got to keep going now and try to get to 30 [points] as quickly as we can."
With 12 games left in the season, Hunt added that he now wants to lock down a consistent starting line-up for his team, having been with them for several weeks now.
"I know my team now, I've been here for five or six leagues games and we've played about 10 games [in total], so I know the team now, I know the players and I know what they can and can't do," he added.
"It's a matter of putting it together and trying to get a more consistent starting 11, which we've got now – we're pretty consistent with where we've been in the last game or two.
"Because that also helps momentum sometimes – in the CAF [Confed Cup] I was chopping and changing, and I did it on purpose to try and get us to find out a little bit more, and we did that.
"We just don't want to be in these situations again, so let's see, there's a lot to play for still, we've got to get to that 30-point mark, which will give you – most times – a little bit of breathing room."
