Gabriel Magalhaes returns to Arsenal training ahead of upcoming Sporting clash

Arsenal were handed a major lift ahead of their Champions League quarter-final first leg against Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday, with Gabriel Magalhaes returning to full training today.

The Brazilian defender had raised concerns after picking up an injury during Arsenal's FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Southampton. He was forced off late in the match at St Mary's, appearing to struggle with a knee issue, with William Saliba replacing him for the final stages.

Speaking after that defeat, manager Mikel Arteta admitted the situation looked worrying. "I think he felt something," Arteta said. "I don't know exactly what it is. We're going to have to assess him. But obviously, when a player is asking to be substituted, it's never good news."

However, just days later, Gabriel was back on the training pitch at London Colney, taking part in the session and appearing comfortable as Arsenal prepared for their trip to Lisbon.

There was further positive news for Arteta, with Leandro Trossard also returning to training after missing the Southampton match due to a groin problem. Declan Rice was another key figure involved, having recovered after withdrawing from England's recent friendlies.

Despite the encouraging developments, Arsenal still face several injury concerns ahead of the European clash. Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, Jurrien Timber and Piero Hincapie all remain doubts, leaving Arteta with decisions to make as he finalises his squad.

Meanwhile, Mikel Merino is not expected to feature, with the midfielder continuing his recovery after undergoing foot surgery earlier this year.

With key players returning but others still uncertain, Arsenal head into the Sporting test with cautious optimism as they aim to take control of the tie.
