Exclusive: Gavin Hunt surprised 'injured' Luke Fleurs could join Kaizer Chiefs

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt says defender Luke Fleurs has been unavailable for selection since pre-season, and is surprised that the player could now be joining Kaizer Chiefs.

As first reported by SABC Sport, the 23-year-old is now a free agent and is currently being assessed by Amakhosi – a club that previously showed interest in his services seven months ago before landing his teammate Thatayaone Ditlhokwe.

Hunt explained what could have led to the parties going their separate ways.

"I think he'd been injured for the last month or so. Well, pretty much most of [the season], from the start of even pre-season, he didn't do much," Hunt revealed to the public broadcaster's sports desk.

"So, he missed a lot. I don't understand how he can go on trial today when he was injured yesterday, I don't know how it works."

The coach, whose side hosts Chiefs in a DStv Premiership clash at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday evening, insists it wasn’t his call to offload Fleur – a player that had in fact penned a new three-year contract as recently as January.

"Well, I was quite happy for him to stay, but obviously he wasn't partaking and the club felt that we've got four centre-backs now that, if he wasn't happy... I wasn't party to the agreements, and what actually happened in the meeting," he added.

"I didn't have one meeting with him in terms of sitting with the agent or the CEO [Stan Matthews], it was all done by them, so I'm not [aware] of what actually went down, and that's the truth."
