Erling Haaland fires Man City top of Premier League as Burnley relegated

Manchester City climbed to the summit of the Premier League after a 1-0 win over Burnley, a result that also confirmed the Clarets' relegation.

The decisive moment came inside five minutes when Erling Haaland finished coolly, lifting the ball over Martin Dubravka after a precise pass from Jeremy Doku.

The victory saw City leapfrog Arsenal for the first time since August. Both sides are level on 70 points with a plus 37 goal difference, but City lead the table having scored 66 goals compared to Arsenal's 63.

City created numerous chances to extend their lead, with Rayan Cherki and Haaland both striking the woodwork. Despite dominating with 28 attempts, they were unable to find a second goal, while Burnley threatened at times, notably through Zian Flemming.

Manager Pep Guardiola stressed the importance of maintaining momentum in the title race. "The only chance is to win all the games," he said. "Winning is the main target. With the chances we created we could have scored more, but after such a demanding game a few days ago, it was not easy."

He added: "We did not have that sharpness in the last part. If we scored the second goal, it would be more relaxed."

For Burnley, the defeat ended their brief stay in the top flight. They have won just one of their last 25 league matches, and relegation had felt inevitable in recent weeks.

Manager Scott Parker admitted the result was painful but remained focused on the future. "I am hurting and I'm disappointed and I'm sad for the owners and the players," he said. "That's just where I am at this moment."

Parker refused to confirm whether he would remain in charge next season but insisted discussions would take place. "We will sit down as a group and work out what the best way forward is to keep us moving in the right direction and make us better."

He also highlighted the progress of his squad despite the outcome. "My sole focus is on this young group and trying to develop them. I honestly believe we've done that," he said. "We will reflect, we will learn, and we will regroup and be better."

Reflecting on the performance, Parker added: "I'm immensely proud of the team. While results have not been what we wanted, you saw a group that left everything on the pitch."

City's title charge continues, while Burnley now turn their attention to rebuilding for life back in the Championship.
