Eddie Howe: Nothing will 'surprise' Newcastle in second season in Europe

The Magpies are embarking on their second Champions League campaign in three years, and Howe believes the squad is now more accustomed to the demands of Europe's elite stage.

"We're enjoying, I think, the buildup now. We're used to it from two years ago," said Howe.

"There's nothing that is going to hopefully surprise us in that sense. I think that can only help us perform at a better level."

While acknowledging that performances and growth are important, Howe stressed that victories remain the decisive benchmark. He added that the journey of building consistency and resilience makes success more achievable over time.

The new league-phase format of the Champions League offers slightly more breathing space compared to the old six-match group stage, but Howe is not taking any chances. Newcastle remain far from assured of progression, meaning there is little room for complacency.

He added: "Winning's the be all and end all. It's never been lost to me as manager.

"You can play as well as you want, but you have to try and win and do it all types of performance. We've done that well the last few years.

"In terms of our Champions League campaign, it is important that we do that very quickly."
