Eddie Howe: Newcastle players must bounce back quickly ahead of Barcelona tie

Eddie Howe has labelled Newcastle's Champions League round-of-16 tie against Barcelona on Tuesday as the "biggest game in the club's history".

The fixture represents a remarkable moment in Newcastle's modern resurgence. Only a few years ago the club were battling relegation in the Premier League, but their rise since the takeover by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund has propelled them into Europe's elite competition.

Facing five-time European champions Barcelona, now managed by Hansi Flick, is a sign of just how far the club has come.

Newcastle enter the contest after suffering disappointment in the FA Cup, where they were knocked out by Manchester City. The exit frustrated supporters eager to see the club challenge for silverware, but Howe has urged his squad not to dwell on the setback.

Instead, preparations at the club's training base, Darsley Park, have been marked by intense focus as the players turn their attention to the European showdown.

Howe acknowledged the challenges his side faces, with Newcastle having played continuously without a free week since November. The demanding schedule has taken a physical toll on a relatively thin squad.

"It's easy to be negative at the moment. I understand we've gone out of the FA Cup but we have the biggest game in the club's history coming up and we've got to approach it that way," Howe told reporters.

"We've never been in this position in the Champions League before and it's the best competition there is. We have got to get the players ready for that and we've no time to dwell on this.

"We need to try and find some energy from somewhere that will elevate our performance to a level we've not seen this season. That's the only way we'll get through."
