Dr Desiree Ellis special recognition from CPUT, a win for women in sport

Banyana Banyana coach Dr Desiree Ellis says her special recognition from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology is important for the growth of women in sport in South Africa.

She shared with SABC Sport after being conferred with an Honorary Doctorate in Sports Management by the Cape Town educational institution CPUT on Thursday.

Ellis believes her accolade reflects the struggles and triumphs of powerful women in the sports fraternity, and dedicates it to all those who have paved the way for women to climb the ladder in male-dominated industries.

"I think this reflects the collective efforts and struggles and triumphs of countless individuals and so many people who've paved the way for women in sports. I think it is huge for the growth of women in sports in the country because when we look back at our journey in women's football we are struck by the challenges we have overcome and the progress we have achieved," Ellis said.

"I think that happens in women's sports in general but we are also excited about how far women's football has been recognised far beyond the borders and it goes beyond the goals we scored and the trophies we have won because it's about the profound impact in society and that's what women in sports do.

"We know it's about shattering areas and defining stereotypes and most importantly making the dreams of future generations of athletes, so it's encouraging to be able to dream without limits."

CPUT honoured Ellis for her role in uplifting women’s football in the country, this included the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title, becoming South Africa’s first continental crown in women’s football.

She also led the team to the quarterfinals at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, becoming the first ever senior national team (men or women) to make it out of the group stages of the global tournament.

Ellis has edged fellow women in sport to not be afraid to tap into the unknown, in their journeys to pursuing their dreams.

"I think for all women and anyone looking to pursue their dreams just remember that it's valid. Remember that the space that's there does not have a name on it, the space that is there is up for grabs. Remember also to believe in yourself and pursue what you love."
