Sundowns to unveil Mashego tomorrow

SABC Sport can confirm that Bafana Bafana international Terrence Mashego is expected to sign a five-year contract with Mamelodi Sundowns on Thursday, concluding a shock transfer from Cape Town City.

Reports had linked the left-back with a possible move to Kaizer Chiefs during the early days of the current transfer window that will close on 22 September, but it™s the DStv Premiership title holders that have won the race for the highly rated player.

According to sources at City, the decision to accept a bid from Downs for one of their regulars eight games into their league campaign is simply because the offer is too good to refuse for both parties.

Indications are that the Brazilians have spent well over R10-million to get the deal over the line and that naturally means Mashego™s personal terms, which were successfully negotiated over the course of the week and will be officially signed off tomorrow, would have improved from his current City contract.

The Mother City outfit looked set to hold on to the player when chairman John Comitis earlier triggered the two-year option on his initial agreement following his arrival from TS Galaxy in October 2020.

But with the player keen for a new challenge and Comitis, it is believed, open to selling him overseas or to the highest bidder locally, Downs were always going to be favourites to add Mashego to their already talented squad.

He is expected to land in Gauteng tomorrow to complete the move and SABC Sport understands that Lyle Lakay could be going in the opposite direction, considering Mashego™s arrival puts a question mark on his future after he has already fallen behind Aubrey Modiba in the pecking order this season.

Sundowns have a press conference at Chloorkop on Thursday, ahead of their top-of-the-table clash against AmaZulu on Sunday, but it hasn™t been ruled out that Mashego could be confirmed as their latest signing at the event.
